Purple Bee Balm is a compact native herbaceous perennial with aromatic toothed dark green foliage.  The abundant fringe like red-purple flowers blooms in whorls at the top of the thick stems from late spring into summer attracting bees and butterflies.  Best in full sun and well-drained soil.  Mildew resistant variety. 

Monarda didyma is a native host for several moths, including Gray Marvel and Hermit Sphinx.  The flower nectar also attracts other pollinators, bees, butterflies, and the Ruby-Throated hummingbird.  

MAINTENANCE NEEDS:  Low Maintenance.  Root rot can be an issue in poorly-drained soils.  Susceptibility to foliar diseases increase if the soil is allowed to dry.  Watch for rust.

LANDSCAPE USES:  Accents or Group Plantings, Borders, Woodland Gardens, Naturalized Areas, Wildlife Garden, Rock Gardens, Medicinal Garden, and Containers.
